The City of Richmond has celebrated Juneteenth for a number of years. However, I noticed that North Richmond doesn’t have it as a community event. Maybe its origins are lesser known here.
As a refresher, June 19, 1865, represents the day slaves in Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom.
So even though it’s not publicly celebrated here, there are always a number of celebrations around the country.
I think the conversations on economics are a great way to invest the time on Juneteenth — really year-round.
By the way, Texas has been celebrating this event since the 80s.
